Getting to Know Me More
How many siblings do you have?
I am the oldest of all my siblings. After my parents had me, my brother was born three years later. Following that, my little sister arrived. Then, only 10 MONTHS later, we welcomed “The Quads!” That’s right! Two boys and two girls joined the rest of us to make SEVEN kids in all!
It’s Saturday morning. What’s the first thing you do when you wake up?
I wonder if the kids have milk in the fridge and hope it’s not too full for them to pour out themselves without making a mess!
What’s one story you will someday tell your grandchildren?
I would tell them that when we were younger, their granddad was a skinny little thing and that I thought he was cute, but too skinny for my taste. He must have hit a growth spurt because the next time I saw him at church, he actually had some meat on those bones! After getting to know him, it doesn’t matter whether he’s skin and bones or meaty and healthy, I’m grateful that we get to share our lives together until eternity.
If you could thank God for one thing in your life, what would it be?
Chocolate!!! If it didn’t lead to diabetes, I would eat it all day, everyday!
Which animal represents you the best and why?
An owl. I don’t really like being up at night, but I can get things done without interruptions and feel accomplished for the day while everyone else in my house is asleep.
What punctuation mark best describes your personality? Why?
A period because I’m usually calm and peaceful. It takes a lot to bring me to an exclamation point!
What’s the oldest piece of clothing you still own and wear?
There’s a t-shirt I’ve had since I was a teen that says, “Fred Hammond & RFC.” I bought at a concert they performed at the Fox Theatre in St. Louis, Missouri. If you know what “RFC” stands for, then you probably know how old this shirt is!
How did you become a Daystar Singer?
I started out assisting the Daystar Singers during the Refreshing Times Conference. Once a spot became available to sing with them permanently, I was asked to join the team. It’s been such a huge blessing to worship God alongside my husband and keyboard player, Chuck Bethany, as well as the rest of the group!
What is your funniest moment as a Daystar Singer?
Everyone knows the Marcus & Joni program normally begins with the hosts greeting the audience before we sing a song. So about a minute before the show started, I figured I had enough time to run to the ladies room. Well, things are not always so predictable on live television. As I’m coming out of the ladies room, instead of hearing the theme music for the program, I hear the Daystar band playing a song! And not just any song, they were playing “Glorious,” which is the song we practiced that morning with me as the lead vocalist! So I go racing to the set trying to get on stage without making a scene. My heart was beating so fast and I had a lump in my throat. I thought, “I’m never going to make it before my first ad lib!” Thankfully, the production team rocked it and discreetly got me up there before my solo. In a matter of moments, I had to pull myself together and make His praise glorious!
Tell us about a time when God has been great in your life.
After I had my twins, I wasn’t sure if God had chosen the right person to handle everything life had dealt me. I would have never guessed that I’d be home with five children under age 5! Discouraged, confused, and exhausted, I really didn’t know how I was going to make it. But God is so faithful to His Word! In Isaiah 40:29, it says, “He increases the strength of those who are weak.” As I looked to the Father in prayer and fasting, expecting Him to increase my strength, He did! Over the years, I’ve learned that true strength is only found in our great God! When I’m out with the kids by myself, people always ask me, “How do you do it?” My answer is always, “By the grace of God!” Sometimes I have to get alone in His presence to get another increase in strength, but He never fails to give me what I need to make it through. As it says in God’s Word, “They that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength.”( Isaiah 40:31)
